Unparalleled system management – surely this is one of the primary goals of a system administrator. No matter if it is about software, hardware, server or a workstation, but these need to be properly managed to ensure that all systems are running effectively and efficiently.
The system administrator is the one responsible to maintain and operate a computer system or network for a company. Thus, he has a wide range of duties that may include effective provisioning, installation/configuration, operation, and maintenance of systems, hardware and software and related infrastructure. He may also need to be engaged in some technical research and development to ensure that the company systems are continuously developed and innovated for a better and quality performance.
Challenges may always be part on doing the work as a system administrator. From simple things such as providing a help desk or a support function, to complex issues like systematic troubleshooting and providing quick fix solutions for some complicated technical problems, these are all passed on to be the system administrator’s burden since not being able to provide efficient solutions to these issues may cause a harmful effect to the company’s computer system or network.
The company’s system may really depend on a system administrator’s effectiveness in doing his work. Therefore, he surely needs to have the skills and the ability to prove that he is the right man for the job.

In working for a computer-based and IT dependent company, it is necessary for one to know the basics of this work. Some of the things you would need to learn about includes:

SKILLS
The system administrator usually leads a group of people handling technical issues so they are expected to have a good team work and communication skills. This helps to make sure that the idea of solving an issue is properly communicated and executed by the people who are expected to do it.
Most importantly, the system administrator is expected to have great problem solving skills. It is expected that he would be the one making sure that the technical issues are resolved so he must be one who can quickly and correctly diagnose the problem as well as providing the best solution for it.

TOOLS
The system administrator might be knowledgeable and skilled enough o do the task, but without a great tool, the work will still not be excellently executed. Most companies who are able to maintain and operate their systems effectively are not only able to hire the best persons for the team, but are able to find the best tools they need for the system to be properly managed and controlled. Therefore, the system administrator must also be provided with a great tool that could help him in doing the job the best way possible.
